Interaction

Perception for close interaction

Reference targets placed at measured distances in a flight arena

The question

What information is needed before approaching a surface or object?

Proposed approach

Study the observations, uncertainties and operator review needed for a bounded task.

What needs to be established

Representative scenes, documented limitations and comparisons against known references.

Reliable interchangeable interfaces

Ask whether the observation is sufficient for the next step

Recognition, distance estimation and deciding whether to approach are different outputs. A comparison should ask each method to provide the information it actually produces. Detection boxes, depth and thermal patterns should not be collapsed into one accuracy figure without a common decision criterion.

Scenes where the method returns nothing are part of the result. Documenting occlusion, reflection, timing and the reference uncertainty makes those cases useful. A reviewer should be able to distinguish a missing observation from a valid observation that advises against approaching.
